This coastal area just North of Playa Blanca offers several natural delights.

Drive past the colourful Janubio salt flats, the largest in the Canary Islands that are still producing, onwards on winding coastal roads to the underwater caves of Los Hervideros. The name refers to the amazing force of the waves into the labrynth of caves making the ocean appear to bubble as if boiling. You can wander around clifftop pathways and watch the display below.

Continue onto the small village of El Golfo, known for its beautiful green lagoon and fresh fish restaurants.

The volcano on the shoreline to the left of El Golfo has been eroded by the elements to reveal a beautiful array of colours in the jagged cliff face, a stark contrast to the emerald green lagoon embedded in the black sand.

The lagoon gets its vibrant colour from the high concentration of Ruppia-Maritima algae present in the water and is roped off to protect it.

To enjoy the overhead view, as you enter El Golfo, take the path to the left of the gift shop to a viewing balcony above the beach.

There are plenty of restaurants to choose from, overlooking the ocean and offering the best photo ops for the sunset on the island, as it sinks down beneath the horizon directly in front of you.
